Hiking
Full and Half Day
These locally guided walks give you amazing views across Beqa. One takes you on a circular loop between the villages of Naiseuseu and Naceva, through village gardens and native forest, up hills and along the beach past Lawaki Beach House.
The second hike is to an old village fortification which sits on top of the rocky promontory of Korovatu (292m) and at the top of Delaibeqa (385m) and the remains of a US-built WWII radar station.
(Not available on Sundays, but short unguided hike at any time)
SNORKELLING IN THE BEQA LAGOON
The reef front at Lawaki Beach House, easily accessible at high tide, has a great selection of shallow water corals and colourful reef fish for you to explore at your leisure. Part of your accommodation payments go to supporting the Kauvala “Tabu”, the marine protected area between Lawaki and Naiseuseu village. A wonderful half day out is to take a boat to the “Sandbank’ just inside the Beqa Barrier Reef. An absolutely stunning array of corals await you in 1 to 3 metres of water. This is everyone’s idea of the perfect coral reef snorkel, and is not to be missed.
HANG OUT
Just chill!
In Fiji, you’ll always find a friendly face waiting to show you around. There’s lots to see just outside your door, village life awaits you!
Village life means immersing yourself with your natural surroundings. The local kids are experts in climbing trees and enjoying the simple pleasures in life.
Fishing
Daily fishing trips with the boys
The sea provides a bountiful feast for the locals at Naceva. The women prepare for a community function by scaling and gutting the fresh catch, brought by a band of the village men.
MAT WEAVING
And other handicrafts
Even today, many household objects are still made by hand in a village.
Floor mats and fans made of Pandanus (Screwpine) leaves by the women, are in daily use, and men make the baskets of coconut leaves used during traditional “Lovo” underground cooking for feasts. One lady in Naiseuseu even has a small fabric screen-printing business.
The ladies will be happy to show you how to weave and make something small to take home. Village life means immersing yourself with your natural surroundings.
COOKING VILLAGE-STYLE
Fijian food is good and plentiful!
Frequently sea-food and fresh green leaf -based, many things are cooked with coconut milk, which adds a deliciously rich sauce.Learn to scrape a coconut and make cream, and cook over a wood fire or small kerosene stove, for skills you won’t gain at home.
