Fijian Village Stays on Beqa Fiji

Full-day guided hike

Delaibeqa and Korovatu

THE FULL DAY HIKE

On this amazing day hike you’ll encounter two very different Reminders of a more troubled past. An old village fortification sits on top of the rocky promontory of Korovatu (292m) and at the top of Delaibeqa (385m) are the remains of a US-built WWII radar Station. You’ll also get a view of life on Beqa today as you walk through Naceva and talk to your local guide.

Lawaki to Naceva (3.5km–1 :1 5hrs)

The walk begins with a pleasant 2km stroll to the neighbouring Kulu Bay resort and a further 1 .5km to Naceva village. Rising up at the far end of the village is Korovatu.

Naceva to Delaibeqa (1 .7km–2:45hrs)

Quietly passing the village school your path rises steeply up the hill and by some impressive ivi trees. 1⁄2km out you get a great view down to Naceva. It’s another 1⁄2km up to the ridgeline. Near the top a clearing gives views out over the trees. If you’re lucky your guide will find you some fresh sugarcane to boost those energy levels. From here it's 1⁄2km northwards along the ridge to the top of Delaibeqa (385m) and the overgrown US radar station. ust be glad you didn’t have to haul up all the concrete mix!

Delaibeqa to Korovatu (1 km–1 :20hrs)

Following the ridge back you soon you encounter the first of a series of ditch and wall defenses built along the narrow ridgeline to protect the top of Korovatu (292m). The space between defenses was a killing ground where the defenders would hold for as long as they could before withdrawing behind the next line of defense. Standing on the narrow ridge it’s sobering to think of the fear and the bloody determination that would have driven both defenders and attackers. Through the defensive lines you reach a flat area marking the top of Korovatu. In the undergrowth you will see stone mounds - the foundations of old bures.

Korovatu to Naceva (1 km–1 :20hrs)

If it is dry underfoot, you can take a steep path that drops off the far side of the clearing. The defenders might have used this route to secretly gather seafood and water. Strewn along the path are various shells, possibly the remains of meals tossed aside long ago.

Naceva to Lawaki (3.5km–1 :1 5hrs)

Back at the village you can have a well-earned rest and, if you’re lucky, a fresh coconut to revive you. The final leg back to Lawaki returns along the beach.
